Soprano Pan

Technical facts: This style of pan is arranged most often in fourths in a clockwise direction and in fifths in a counter clockwise direction. The range of the pan illustrated extends for a total of 29 notes and is pictured on the staff below. The lowest note is middle C and the highest note is E two octaves above this. The outer notes have the lowest pitch. The inner notes are higher pitched and are the octaves to the outer notes.

Alto Pan

The notes on this double pan are arranged in whole tones on each side. The range starts from F # (F#3) below middle C to C# (C#6) two octaves above middle C. There are usually 32 notes in all, 16 on each side. When we play notes which have the same letter name we see that those with a larger area on the pan have the lower pitches. Because of the arrangement of the notes, it is very easy to play the chromatic scale. The notes of this scale alternate between the pans.
